"You could for a need study a speech of some dozen or sixteen lines, which I would set down and insert in’t, could you not?"
Hamlet II i

Speak the Speech...

Making sense of HAMLET*

Location: Your School – double classroom/drama room or similar
May/June 2010

This two hour hands-on workshop, delivered in-schools, is designed to let your students discover Shakespeare’s language without fear. Focusing on HAMLET and using demonstrations and practical exercise students can understand and harness the power of the language of the play and how it reveals character and themes

Although the study of Shakespeare is often placed in the category of literature, it is important to remember that Shakespeare was a man of the theatre with his works being spoken before they were printed. Speak the Speech…will allow students to explore Word, Line, Speech, Scene and Act though seeing and hearing and then exploring Hamlet by “speaking the speech” rather than just reading it.

With demonstrations of the text in action, this workshop focuses on various aspects of the mechanics and dramatic clues of Shakespeare’s language. This leads into textual and dramatic exploration by the students, on their feet, enabling them to discover how the language shapes character, meaning and influences response. Their imaginative investigation will highlight for them the collaborative and diverse nature of theatre. Selected texts will also reflect some of the themes of Shakespeare’s best known play.

Speak the Speech…will help years 10 – 12 English and Drama Students lift the words from the page to the stage in a way that will support aims of their respective syllabi. Although Hamlet is the focus of this workshop, the knowledge gained from this experience will be useful in the study of any Shakespeare play.

For all bookings, maximum group size is 30 students per two-hour session. For larger bookings parallel workshops will be arranged.

In assoc with Actors College of Theatre and Television - Australia's leading independent college for the performing arts.
